The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has released a draft guidance document aiming to limit lead in lipstick and other cosmetics. The document is entitled “Draft Guidance for Industry: Lead in Cosmetic Lip Products and Externally Applied Cosmetics: Recommended Maximum Level”.

The guidance document recommends a maximum level of 10 parts per million (ppm) for lead as an impurity in cosmetic lip products and externally applied cosmetics that are marketed in the country.

The proposed limit is in line with the recommendation from the countries represented in the International Cooperation on Cosmetics Regulations, which includes European Union member countries, Canada, and Japan, in addition to the U.S.

A public consultation is open for this draft guidance until February 22, 2017.
