The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) has issued Draft guideline on articles intended to come into direct and prolonged contact with the skin in relation to restriction entry 27 of Annex XVII to REACH on: Nickel and nickel compounds on January 23, 2017.

This document aims to help and assist producers, importers and distributors of articles, as well as Member States’ authorities, in understanding and complying with their obligations under the REACH Regulation (EU) No 19072006.

The nickel restriction prohibits the placing on the market and the use of nickel and nickel compounds in articles intended to come into direct and prolonged contact with the skin if the rate of nickel release from the parts of these articles coming into direct and prolonged contact with the skin is greater than 0.5 μg Ni/cm²/week.

The restriction applies to the following:

  • earrings,
  • necklaces, bracelets and chains, anklets, finger rings,
  • wrist-watch cases, watch straps and tighteners,
  • rivet buttons, tighteners, rivets, zippers and metal marks, when these are used in garments.
