The European Commission (EC) has scheduled their review of the current restriction for lead used in jewellery. The review is for entries 63 and 50 of Annex XVII to REACH in line of new scientific information.

Specifically, the review covers the following:

  • Paragraph 1 of entry 63 establishes a maximum concentration limit of 0.05% (w/w), for lead in jewellery articles defined in a non-exhaustive manner in paragraph 2. Exemptions from paragraph 1 are provided for in paragraphs 3, 4 and 5.
  • Paragraphs 5 and 6 of entry 50 of Annex XVII establish maximum content limits for each of the listed carcinogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in rubber and plastic components of articles placed on the market for supply to the general public, including specific (lower) limits on toys and childcare articles.

EC should release their review until October 9, 2017 for the lead and December 27, 2017 for PAHs.
