Asia On The Mark Issue 23 (Fall 2007)

UL Standards
(Revisions with effect from July 1- September 30, 2008)

Standard Title
& Description
Summary of Key Requirement Changes Effective Date
Standard No. UL 1077
Supplementary Protectors for Use
in Electrical Equipment, 6th Edition
Requires a protector designated as “Trip Free” or “Trip Free, Cycling” to be designed so that its contacts cannot be held in the closed position by the operating means during trip command conditions. One sample of a family of protectors is required to conduct the test to establish the type of tripping for the entire family. July 14, 2008
Standard No. UL 1236
Battery Chargers for Charging Engine-Starter Batteries, 7th Edition In order to more accurately identify the safety requirements relating to intended use rather than solely on the battery charger’s output current ratings, the definition for household chargers reflects use environments rather than ratings. The definition of household battery charger now relates to whether it is marketed to the general public. Products reclassified from household to commercial may need to convert to a supply cord specified for commercial chargers.

Enclosures will require drip testing to demonstrate compliance with the requirement.

Chargers with SJT and SJ cords for outdoor use, and Marine chargers may need modification to comply with the new requirements of power cord.
