New EMC laboratory in Japan will start operation in 2009.

With the widespread application of electromagnetic waves in diverse digital appliances, automobiles devices and wireless LANs technology, electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) testing is becoming essential for those products. To cope with the growing need, UL will build a new EMC laboratory in the City of Hiratsuka, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan.

The new EMC facility, with an area of 2,521 sqm, is expected to be the largest EMC laboratory in Japan. The lab will feature one 5m anechoic chamber, one semi-anechoic chamber and one shielded room, and two 10m anechoic chambers that accommodate large size products such as automobiles, industrial equipment and medical devices.

The newly added facility will enable UL to provide prompt and improved EMC measuring services to customers especially those in Kantou area, the biggest industrial area in Japan. Site construction for the facility will start July 2008 and operation will begin Spring 2009.
