Spreading safety messages to Beijing consumers

On November 15, the Life Channel TV Station in Beijing, BTV7, featured a fire safety segment in its program “How Should You Do?”

In the show, general manager of UL-CCIC Co, Ltd. William Lin provided safety expert advice and talked about common causes of fire, steps for prevention of fire, and what to do in case of a fire. The program reached 400,000 people in Beijing, China.

The half-hour talk show covered UL’s content flammability and smoke characterization research, with emphasis on the decrease in escape time due to the increase use of synthetic materials in furniture. Tips given to the audiences included how to make the right judgment in a fire situation, how to stop fire from spreading, when to escape from the scene and how. One important advice to the Chinese consumers is that saving lives is more important than property. Through educational programs like this, UL believes it will help increase Chinese consumers’ awareness of fire safety.

UL works to keep coral reefs alive

Collaborated with the Coral Reef Alliance (CORAL), a non-profit organization dedicated to protecting the health of coral reefs, UL has utilized its expertise to help save coral reef systems in Mesoamerica including Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, and Honduras.

In areas of high volume tourism, repeated direct contact with coral reefs by recreational boats and even humans pose an immediate threat. In response to this threat, CORAL sought to provide marine tourism businesses and tour operators with tested standards that will prevent recreational overuse and misuse of coral reefs.

To date, three voluntary standards for the Mesoamerican reef have been published, namely those for Recreational Scuba-Diving Services, Snorkeling Services, and Recreational Boat Operations. To learn more, visit http://www.coralreefalliance.org/.
