Wire & Cable Frequently Asked Questions — Part I (Cont'd)

UL 758
Q: If UL 758 and CSA Standard C22.2 no. 210 are harmonized, would one of the standards, including the corresponding mark and file number, be withdrawn?
A: If a bi-national standard is developed, both standards will continue to exist. The test methods will be the same in each document. There may be national differences, such as marking requirements, which will be identified in the standard. If the manufacturer wishes to maintain both the UL and the CSA Recognitions, file numbers for both organizations will continue to be used as will the mark for each country.
Q: In the UL 758 FUII, the sample selection process was changed so a wide variety of materials and constructions are selected. What does “wide variety of materials and constructions” mean?
A: In the past, we have noticed that we tend to see the same samples selected for FUS testing at the UL test office. The FUII was revised so that different materials, constructions and ratings will be selected over the course of a quarter.
Q: How can a manufacturer or user search a wire with specific construction and rating? Will UL consider notifying all manufacturers when a new style page is created? Will the standards be free to manufacturers in the future?
A: UL has an internal database that we can use to search for a style with specific construction and ratings. We hope that this database will be available to customers in the future. Currently, UL is working to enhance the Web site for AWM to provide more information to clients. It will include publishing up-to-date information such as the issuance of a new style. UL is considering offering clients free access to online UL Standards for free. Details will be announced soon.
