Mr. Shinji Fujino (right), Director of Mutual Recognition Promotion Office, Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, and Michihisa Yamazaki (left), Executive Vice President of UL Apex.

In March 2006, UL Apex Co., Ltd. (UL Apex), the wholly-owned affiliate of Underwriters Laboratories Inc. in Japan, was registered as a Conformity Assessment Body (CAB)* for the R&TTE Directive and the EMC Directive according to a Mutual Recognition Agreement between Japan and the European Union (EU). For manufacturers who apply for CE Marking when exporting products to EU countries, UL Apex is able to provide testing as well as Statements of Opinion for showing product compliance with the directives.

UL Apex’s EMC Laboratory in Ise is the first laboratory in Japan accredited as a Notified Body (NB) for the R&TTE Directive in Japan. With the NB status, UL Apex is able to support manufacturers of telecommunication terminals and radio equipment with product testing services as well as issuing Statements of Opinion that certify product compliance with the R&TTE Directive. The products covered include short-range devices, 2.4GHz wide-band transmitting systems, Global Systems for Mobile Communications (GSM), wireless microphones, and 5GHz wireless LAN equipment.

Alongside the accreditation for R&TTE Directive, UL Apex’s EMC laboratory in Ise was also accredited as a Competent Body (CB), which represents CAB for the EMC Directive. For manufacturers of information technology equipment, audio/ video equipment, household appliances, and industrial and scientific equipment, UL Apex can provide testing, technical construction files review, and certification according to EMC Directive requirements.

For manufacturers in Japan, UL Apex is able to handle their conformity assessment needs for compliance with R&TTE Directive & EMC Directive in shorter turnaround time. By working with UL Apex, local manufacturers can save the hassle of sending product samples to overseas NBs. Also, UL Apex’s experienced staff can support customers in Japan with local services, communicating with them in the local language and in the same time zone.

* Remarks: The CABs are the organizations designated in non-EU countries according to the Mutual Recognition Agreement to perform the same tasks with EU's Notified Bodies (NBs) and Competent Bodies (CBs).
