- Tom Castino becomes UL’s eighth president with a goal to make UL a global service organization.
- UL receives a Stratospheric Ozone Protection Award from the U.S. EPA.
- UL issues its first Standard for recycling systems that clean and save chlorofluorocarbon-based refrigerants used in automobile air-conditioning systems.
- UL establishes a new Field Evaluated Product (FEP) Mark for installed equipment evaluated in the field.
- MOUs are signed with NSF, AGA, Standards Australia and Standards Institute of Israel.
- UL publishes the first UL/CSA bi-national Standard UL 1995 for Heating and Cooling Equipment.
- UL’s Project Control System (PCS) is introduced to replace UL’s time (charge) cards.

- UL expands EMC program to test for electromagnetic susceptibility and emissions.
- UL establishes Local Engineering Services (LES offices) in Dallas, Texas; Boston, Mass.; and Portland, Ore.
- UL develops adjunct five-level performance testing program for data transmission LAN cable.
- ANSI accredits UL’s drinking water additives program.
1992
- UL’s Electrical division and Fire Protection division are consolidated into the new Engineering Services division.
- UL is accepted as an IECEE – CB Scheme NCB for acceptance and issuance of CB Reports
and Certificates.
- UL establishes the Management Systems Advisory Council.
- UL introduces a UL Mark for Canada (C-UL), the first UL Mark designated for use in a specific country outside the United States.
1993
- UL is accredited as a Certification Organization (CO) by the Standards Council of Canada.
- UL Japan Co Ltd., UL's third affiliate, is established in Tokyo.
- UL signs agreements with testing organizations in Canada, Japan, Germany, Sweden and The Netherlands providing for exchange of test data and enabling manufacturers to receive multiple certification marks through one UL evaluation process.
- UL signs an agreement to jointly manage a private product testing laboratory in Mexico in cooperation with ANCE (Asociacion Nacional de Normalizacion y Certificacion del Sector Electrico).
- UL establishes the Client Agent Program (CAP).
- UL introduces holographic labels to prevent counterfeiting of the UL Mark.
1994
- UL celebrates 100 years of service and product testing for public safety.
- UL opens a new testing facility in Northwest region of United States in Camas, Wash.
- UL establishes new international liaison offices in Guangzhou, China, and in Malaysia and Thailand.
- UL establishes new Energy Verification Service (EVS) to provide UL Marks on products verified for energy efficiency per U.S. and Canadian government regulations.
- UL opens LES in Tampa, Fla., USA.
- UL registers its first firm to QS 9000.
- More than six billion UL Marks are applied to products.
- The first edition of UL’s “On The Mark” publication is issued.

- UL establishes a new affiliate in Mexico.
- UL establishes an affiliation with ULC in Toronto, Canada.
- UL’s Food Service Equipment Certification Program is accredited by ANSI.

- UL acquires Demko as UL’s first European subsidiary (affiliate).
- UL establishes new affiliate offices in the United Kingdom and Korea.
- UL establishes a liaison office in India.
- UL establishes the Envirnomental and Public Health Council.
- UL completes a new 10-meter anechoic chamber for EMC testing in Northbrook, Ill., USA.
- UL issues its first ISO 14001 facility registration.
- UL completes a new large-scale fire test facility at Northbrook.
- UL establishes anti-counterfeiting program in conjunction with the United States Customs Service.
1997
- UL establishes affiliate offices in Malaysia and Sweden, and a representative office in Shanghai, China.
- UL India is established as a subsidiary.
- UL announces new combination Canada/US-UL Mark to indicate product compliance with requirements for both countries.
- UL introduces the first online directory for Listed EPH product categories.
1998
- UL establishes a new International Division, consisting of affiliate offices in Europe and Asia.
- UL establishes affiliate offices in Italy and Brazil.
- “UL in circle” symbol with the word “Classified” above the circle is authorized to be used for UL’s Classification Marking on products with a 10-year transition.
1999
- UL establishes affiliate offices in Germany, The Netherlands, France and Argentina.
- Engineering Services and Follow-Up Service Divisions are integrated to become Conformity Assessment Services (CAS).
- ULC expands product certification services to include electrical equipment and appliances under the new Electrical Division.
