1980

  • First Edition of UL’s “Trends” publication is issued.
  • UL establishes agreement with Chinese agency “CCIC” to conduct factory follow-up service in China.
  • UL certifies first deicing and snow melting equipment, first fireplace inserts, and first solar collectors.
  • UL File Numbers for all clients are published in UL Product Directories.

1981

  • UL certifies first golf carts, fiber optic cable, residential sprinklers and EMI filters.

1982

  • UL’s Overseas Inspection Services Department is established.
  • UL’s TATE Program is established.
  • UL certifies first Fire Department aerial devices, first electronic medical diagnostic equipment, and first robotic devices.

1983

  • UL certifies first bullet resistant fire doors, hot tubs, distress signals for boats and high security key locks.

1984

  • UL initiates new EMI testing service.
  • UL certifies first compact disc (CD) players.

1985

  • UL issues 500th Standard, UL 1459, the first Standard for Telephone Equipment.
  • UL Marks appear on 2-1/2 billion products manufactured in more than 40,000 plants worldwide.

1986

  • UL opens new testing facility in North Carolina at 12 Laboratory Drive, Research Triangle Park.
  • UL’s test facility in Tampa, FL is closed and testing services relocated to RTP.
  • UL establishes the first UL-operated inspection centers outside the United States.
  • UL establishes a service for “Early Authorization for Use of UL Mark.”
  • UL publishes first edition of the Directory of Appliances Evaluated in Accordance with International Publications.

1987

  • New EMI test facility is constructed at Northbrook.
  • UL conducts first combustion toxicity tests based on New York State regulations.

1988

  • UL certifies first bullet resistant vests for police body armor.
  • UL certifies first product for sanitation to NSF Standards (ice cream freezers).
  • UL establishes new international affiliates in Hong Kong and Taiwan to provide direct control over UL factory inspections in Asia.

1989

  • UL introduces new ISO 9000 Quality Registration Service Program to register facilities to quality assurance standards.
  • UL affiliates in Hong Kong and Taiwan begin testing products for the UL Mark.
  • UL operates follow-up services in 89 countries.
  • UL establishes new affiliate in Singapore for Follow-Up Services.
