1970

  • UL establishes the Marine Department and opens a test facility in Tampa, FL.
  • UL establishes “CCN” system to identify UL product categories.
  • The “CCN” replaces the previous Guide Number system.
  • UL certifies (Recognized Component) first marking and labeling system.

1971

  • UL certifies first life vests (PFDs) for buoyancy and flammability.

1972

  • U.S. Coast Guard recognizes UL as the official testing agency for buoyant life vests.
  • UL issues first Standard for Medical Equipment.

1973

  • UL certifies first garage door opener and issues first Standard for Door Openers.

1974

  • UL certifies first security system designed to control entrance to secured areas by means of personal identification.
  • UL certifies first automated gasoline dispensing system activated by a credit card, first press controls, first plastic pipe for underground water supplies, first quick response sprinkler.
  • The name of Underwriters' Laboratories, Inc. is changed to clarify the fact that UL is not owned or controlled by the insurance industry by eliminating the apostrophe and the comma from the name.
  • UL is authorized by HUD to function as both a DAPIA and IPIA under the HUD Manufactured Housing Standards Program.

1975

  • After UL staff investigated 10,000 incidents of TV tube fires, UL develops the landmark federal television standard which was adopted by the Consumer Product Safety Commission for federal regulations for televisions.
  • UL certifies first home video arcade games.

1976

  • UL introduces the new “UR” Mark for certification of Recognized Components.
  • UL establishes Follow-Up Services Council.

1977

1978

  • Jack Bono becomes UL’s seventh president and launches major initiatives to expand UL’s international operations.
  • UL certifies first personal computers (PCs).

1979

  • UL concludes 74 years of testing services at the Ohio Street facility in Chicago and completes the move of all testing services from Chicago to Northbrook facilities.
  • UL builds new hydraulics laboratory to test high capacity fire protection equipment at Northbrook.
  • UL certifies first ATM and first electronic grocery scanners to measure risk of laser beams.
