1950s

1950

  • UL certifies first electronic type automatic fire alarm system for fire detection, first industrial portable tools, first combination heater and speaker for drive-in theaters, and first traveling infrared ovens for car repainting industry.

1951

  • UL certifies first aluminum conductors in thermoplastic insulated wires and cables.
  • UL Listed lightning rod equipment is installed on the White House.

1952

  • UL issues 140th Standard, UL 857, the first Standard for Busways.
  • UL certifies first telephone answering machine and first prefabricated highway toll booth.

1953

  • UL certifies first main frame computer, first refrigerator with ice water tap connected to water supply and first color television receiver.
  • UL’s Inspection Control Department is established.

1954

  • UL’s West Coast testing station relocates to 1655 Scott Blvd., Santa Clara, Calif.
  • UL begins operations at new testing facilities in Northbrook, Ill. and begins transferring test operations from 207 E. Ohio Street in Chicago.
  • Internal Revenue Service rules that UL is a non-profit organization testing for public safety. UL uses tax savings to expand testing facilities.
  • UL certifies first bulk milk coolers for farm use.

1955

  • UL certifies first printed wiring board, first wireless remote control for television receivers and first electronic computing machinery.
  • UL certifies first bullet resisting teller windows for drive-in banking.

1956

  • UL certifies first high frequency electronic cooking range, first gasoline powered lawnmower and first heated canned food vending machine.
  • UL certifies European-made products, initiating a major new international activity and establishes factory follow-up service in Europe with inspections carried out by European-based testing agencies.

1957

  • UL certifies first thermoplastic television cabinets and first Christmas tree lighting strings with midget size lampholders.

1958

  • UL certifies first household refrigerators with safety door latch mechanism.
  • UL builds new fire protection laboratory in Northbrook including a test furnace for floor/ceiling assemblies that utilizes moveable test frames, setting the stage for numerous major breakthroughs in the development of fire resistant designs for floor/ceiling assemblies.
  • UL certifies first marine type light fixture.

1959

  • Merwin Brandon becomes UL’s fifth president as UL grows dramatically in size to meet the increasing demands associated with testing more complex products.
  • UL certifies products made in Japan and initiates factory Follow-Up Service in Japan with inspections carried out by independent agency in Japan.
  • UL certifies first photocopier.
